Current treatment options for patients with heart failure and mitral regurgitation include:
Symptom management through the use of prescription medications that control fluid balance and heart function can partially reduce the symptoms associated with heart failure; however, it fails to treat the cause of the mitral regurgitation directly and does not prevent further deterioration of the heart.
Surgical treatment to repair the mitral valve may be an option and, when successful, can improve symptoms and heart function. Unfortunately, due to the risks associated with open heart surgery, many patients are not eligible for this option.
Cardiac Dimensions has developed a device which is designed to treat the leaking mitral valve, reduce mitral regurgitation and thus reduce heart failure symptoms without surgical intervention.
