New Treatment Option
The CARILLON™ Mitral Contour System™
consists of
an implant and a delivery system that is designed to reshape the
mitral valve to reduce mitral regurgitation,
a condition frequently associated with heart failure.
The device is implanted in a minimally invasive or
non-surgical procedure called Percutaneous Mitral Annuloplasty.
“Minimally invasive” means that no surgery is required,
but instead the procedure is done using a long narrow tube called
a catheter. The procedure is performed in the hospital in a heart
catheterization lab. A doctor with special training and experience
in heart catheter procedures will put the device through a catheter
and into the blood vessel that goes around the mitral valve. The
CARILLON™ implant has a contoured or shaped
ribbon which is held in place by anchors on either end. Once in
place, this small device is designed to tighten the valve leaflets
together and improve mitral regurgitation. Symptoms, such as shortness
of breath and tiredness may also improve. The device is currently
being studied in
clinical trials.
